Citibanamex Center
The Citibanamex Center is better known by its former name, Banamex Center. It is easily the largest meeting and convention center in the city. As the photo above shows, it is located within the Hipódromo Las Américas complex, which is even larger. It has hosted more than 12,000 events since its inauguration in 2002. The center is solely responsible for tens of thousands of visitors visiting Mexico City each year.
The center has 34,000 square meters of column-free exhibition space. This can be broken down into four separate pavilions. There are another 25 multipurpose rooms with capacity for between 5,000 and 10,000 people.
Citibanamex Center:
- It hosts 790 events a year on average.
- Attendance is estimated at 2 million visitors a year.
- The largest event in its history was the 17th International AIDS Conference in 2008, which hosted 24,000 officials.
- An average of 698,406 exhibition stands are installed per year
- During the COVID-19 pandemic, from 2020 to 2021 the center became a pop-up hospital. Its 854 beds complemented those of the rest of the hospitals available in Mexico City.
The center is probably better known today than the gigantic hippodrome located outside. These grounds are also shared with the Mexican Olympic Committee, which runs a small museum . There are also several casinos, a small children's theme park and a military hospital.
Annually, the most talked-about event, at least in Mexico City, is probably the Zona Maco contemporary art fair. It is celebrated every February (although during the pandemic it was held in smaller venues). For international visitors, it is an easy place to find and is an integral part of town and city life. It is west of the Polanco neighborhood and is accessible to visitors from the entire region.
